Fugitive rabbi denied bail

Israeli fugitive rabbi Eliezer Berland has been denied bail in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court. The rabbi will have to stay in prison until his extradition matter is finalised.
The 78-year-old stands accused of sex crimes in his home country. He’s been on the run from authorities for years.
Berland was arrested earlier this month after he was admitted to a Sandton hospital.

What Is Purim?
He was denied bail by Magistrate Pravina Raghunandan. Raghunandan says she found that the rabbi is a flight risk due to him paying a bail of R850 000 in the Netherlands and still fleeing the country.
The Magistrate says that should she have granted the rabbi bail and imposed conditions, the accused would have easily breached those conditions, in the same manner in which he behaved in the Netherlands.
The court also found that he failed to forward supporting documentation in regard to his claims of seeking political asylum.
